Installing Dell OMSA on Windows Server 2012 Core

Having recently encountered a couple of issues around this - here's a quick post for anyone listening.

There seem to be a number of posts out there regarding installing Dell Open Manage Server Administrator on Windows Server 2012 Core. None of them seem to reference the current state of play, which is Dell OMSA 7.3.

We recently installed a number of such nodes and ended up with significant issues because of the WOW64 steps included in this guide on the Dell community site.

The short version of this story is - our experience is that you don't need to do either of the WOW64 steps when running 7.3. Installing OMSA 7.3 on Server 2012 Core RTM running on a PowerEdge R420 we had no issues installing without enabling & disabling WOW64 (we tried this in a virtual environment first). On the other hand enabling and disabling (this was the problem) actually impacted a 3rd-party application that then refused to install and cost us many hours of troubleshooting to narrow down the issue. As that server was a production hypervisor we actually ended up formatting & re-installing the OS to get things up and running but we were able to do some testing and found that re-enabling WOW64 - using this command:

dism  /online /enable-feature /featurename:ServerCore-WOW64

and then rebooting actually then allowed the other application to work correctly.

Another one for the list of things that you wish didn't happen on a Sunday morning... or any other time for that matter!

Ciao!
